GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 9

COMMUNITY GROUPS

Dallas' death leaves a hole in the world

Dallas Owens has died. What will we do without him? Who will keep our software up to date and fill us in on the latest gossip? Who will we argue with about women's rights and the relative health benefits of hamburgers and why vegetables should not be avoided? Who will send out the thank-yous for the Garden Party and take our side in all disputes? Who will drive Greg crazy with how slow he drives?

What will we do without him? Who will volunteer to run our errands? Who will fill in on the phones and put up AIDS Walk banners in the rain? Who will write letters to the editor of the Chronicle?

Margaret Cutler is a nurse at the AIDS Clinical Trial Unit at University Hospital, a member of the North Coast HIV/AIDS Coalition and the mother of three children, two of whom are gay. She is also the former president of the Mental Health Association in Geauga County.

Who will help train the police cadets and speak on the radio about living with AIDS?

What will we do without him? There's a hole in our world and there's nothing left in that hole except our anger-anger that this dear friend had to die this death; anger for the friends who have gone before him; anger at a city indifferent to its losses; anger that there are 6,000 to 10,000 people in this city who are HIV positive today who will follow in his footsteps, whose friends, families and lovers will go through the same pain and loss. What will we do without them?

Seven new members join board

The Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Cleveland is pleased to announce the appointment of Margaret Cutler, Buck Harris, Henry Hawley, Kevin Martin, M.D., Les Simon, and Doug Van Auken, M.D., to its board of trustees. The appointments occurred at the July 18 and August 15 board meetings.

OF GREATER CLEVELAND

Buck Harris, locally famous (and soon to be nationally famous) gay radio talk show host, brings a background in public relations and community AIDS education to his board position. His personal goal is to increase the Center's visibility in Cleveland.

Henry Hawley is a curator at the Cleve-

land Museum of Art and brings more than eight years of experience as a Center donor and volunteer to the board. He is a past board member of Lyric Opera Cleveland.

Kevin Martin is a child psychiatrist with Kaiser. He was a volunteer with PRYSM, the Center's youth group, for two years and is a member of the North Coast Men's Chorus.

Les Simon is a volunteer with the Center's Living Room and will bring his experiences as a community member living with AIDS to his role on the board.

Doug Van Auken, a physician in private practice, is a long-time Center volunteer. His practice is centered in Cleveland's near West Side and he speaks fluent Spanish. He also has experience in community organizing and community development.

The addition of the above members brings the number of board members to 15. A number of board members have terms that expire in October, so the Center is seeking additional board candidates. Strong experience
